Statement |
I draw my inspiration from the atmosphere surrounding nature, aiming to emulate those sensory perceptions within my pieces. Living in the midst of the countryside I am constantly recording images in my memory and associating them with an emotion or sensation I feel at that moment. This may take on an extremely abstract form or a more straightforward, subtle portrayal. My technique is self-taught and my influences continue to evolve, moving towards more sculptural forms.
The ethereal qualities of glass allow the layering of image, creating depth and texture. Using clear float glass, metals, enamels, oxides and mineral powders enable an organic flow of the materials during the firing process (this being an important element of my work). I consider my kiln, which generates its own atmosphere when firing, (oxidizing, reducing, and fusing) to have the ultimate say on the finished piece.

| Biography |
Having first studied Textile and Knitwear Design at Leicester in 1981, I continued to design and produce women’s clothing. By the end of the 80s I found myself involved in the buying and selling of high fashion clothing, which really wasn’t for me. I missed the freedom of creativity, so in 1994 I decided to study Art and Design. After 3 years of pure enjoyment, I graduated with a 1st class degree, specialising in Visual and Applied Arts from the UEA.
It was only during the finally year of my study that I discovered my fascination with glass. Frustrated that I’d only discovered my interest towards the end of my study, yet driven by my intrigue, I bought a small potter’s kiln and set about teaching myself the method of fused glass. The following 13 years presented me with a series of futile disasters, wonderful discoveries and thankfully, some welcome rewards.
