Artworks Concert 2009 - The Delightful Companions

Saturday 19 September 2009 7.00 pm
(doors/bar open 6.00pm)

To help ARTWORKS celebrate its 10th anniversary, we welcome, once again The Delightful Companions, who last year gave us a highly spirited and engaging Baroque concert. This year, they will present a programme featuring Purcell and Handel, recreating a selection of their diverse repertoire during this, the 350th anniversary of Purcell’s birth and the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death.

Two trio sonatas by Handel, full of his wit and invention, will form the centrepiece of this concert of baroque chamber music from England. In the 250 years since his death, Handel’s music has never fallen from favour.

Henry Purcell, from the generation before Handel, was the greatest English-born composer of his time, and the Delightful Companions will play two works by this ‘English Great’ to mark the 350th anniversary of his birth.

England looked toward the continent for musical inspiration, and the music of Telemann and Corelli were widely distributed and played here. Telemann himself visited his friend Handel in London, and to represent this, the Delightful Companions will include one of Telemann’s famous ‘Paris’ quartets, and two delightful trio sonatas by Corelli.

ELIZABETH PAGE ARCM studied at the Royal College of Music, specialising in Early Music. She plays recorders, other early winds, viols and occasionally the harpsichord. She was appointed to the professorial staff at the Royal College of Music in the early 70’s teaching the recorder, Renaissance and Baroque ensembles. She also taught at St Pauls Girls’ School, Roehampton Institute and Kingston University. On moving to Suffolk, Elizabeth started ‘The Delightful Companions’.
