Liz Waugh McManus

Sculptor
Artist's Statement
I aim to achieve layers of meaning and a sense of otherworldliness in my work. The ritualistic aspect and theatricality relates to my background in theatre and anthropology as well as sculpture.

I specialize in solid cast glass, sometimes combined with other materials e.g. wood, concrete, steel, or bronze. I contrast clear with coloured glass and polished with partially-polished /unpolished surfaces.

Recent sculptures distil and exaggerate botanical structures to celebrate renewal and abundance. I am using a range of visual and intellectual sources, from eighteenth century botanical works such as Thornton’s botanical engravings, Bosch’s fantastical plant symbolism, and contemporary cultural uses of flowers to mark rites of passage.

Biography
After training in art and design at Dartington College of Arts and Oxford Polytechnic, I did a PhD in anthropology of art at the Queen’s University of Belfast. As well as being a sculptor, I run Obelon Arts, which produces theatre shows and organises arts projects. The language of gesture and movement runs through all my work.
