Artist's Statement
As a child one looks at objects such as clouds or trees and imagination plays tricks turning them into chariots, caricature faces, demons or whatever. Within a shell there could be a landscape, a ripple in a stone could be a ploughed furrow in a field, a rotted stump of wood could be a rock face. Children may think this in their secret world, but it is usually lost by conforming to adult values and conventions of what things are in reality, rather than what they are in their imagination. As an artist I try to harness these qualities in my work.

Biography
Julia grew up in a family of artists and studied at Goldsmith’s College and the Royal Academy Schools. She sold her first painting at the RA Summer show when she was nineteen, and came second in the National Portrait Gallery Portrait Award in 1980, and was then commissioned by the NPG to paint Lord Ramsey of Canterbury.

Julia has since developed her own approach to the drawing of growths and natural forms such as plants, rocks, shells and wood. Fundamentally, she is a figurative artist with a strong belief in sound drawing. She has exhibited at a number of group and one-woman shows including the Bankside Gallery, the Mall Galleries, the Maas Gallery, and Waterhouse & Dodd, Cork Street, as well as in Germany and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her work is in private and public collections in Britain, the rest of Europe, the USA and Australia.
