Painter/Printmaker
Artist's Statement
The environment is the primary inspiration in my art, which has led to philosophical observations of nature’s imprint on the manmade landscape. My personal style of painting has a printmaker’s sensibility, as I build up textural layers & surface effects to mimic organic erosion, surface weathering or slow decay - as visual distillations of the passage of time, the changing landscape and its fragile ecology. My intention is that these works transcend initial perceptions of the abstracted ‘surface’ and that like the environment they reflect, they should be traversed slowly, revealing a deeper significance over a period of time. In 2011, I am working on a new series of small mixed media prints to further explore the concept of environmental change, liminality & transformation within the creative process. I have also recently begun creating a series of paper-based vessels as a way of developing some of these ideas within a sculptural aesthetic.

Biography
I studied fine art at Farnham & The Royal College of Art, specialising in printmaking. While a student at the RCA I was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to Athens School of Fine Arts for one term. My travels around Greece (and Turkey) inspired an enduring fascination with archaeological artefacts, old ruins, derelict structures and weathered surfaces. After I graduated from the RCA I relocated to Suffolk to establish my first art studio. I first worked in papermaking, collage & assemblage, then mixed media paintings on wood panel and canvas. The East Anglian landscape with its myriad changes, in macro or panorama, natural or manmade, continues to be a source of artistic inspiration.
