Jazz Green

Painter/Printmaker
Artist's Statement
I combine painting, printmaking, collage and papermaking in my art - exploring elements of colour and texture found in environmental erosion and decay. I create abstract, textural minimalist artworks which resonate with an awareness of the landscape and the seasons, often with allusions to earth, sky or the horizon, taking much inspiration from the beauty of imperfection and transience, a Wabi Sabi aesthetic. My method of painting has a printmaker’s sensibility, building up textures and coloured glazes, often surface monoprinting, then blocking out or scrubbing back to reveal the previously hidden layers of the painting’s surface, echoing the natural processes of erosion and decay. I have recently been working on a series of small collagraphs and etchings (some mounted on canvas, rather than framed), inspired by my fascination with the intricate patterns and colours of rust, mould and lichens.

Biography
I studied fine art at Farnham and The Royal College of Art, specialising in printmaking. While a student at the RCA I was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to Athens School of Fine Arts for one term, and my travels around Greece (and into Turkey) inspired an enduring fascination with archaeological artefacts, patinas and eroded surfaces. After I graduated frrom the RCA I moved up to Suffolk to establish my first studio space. Having no printing press at the time I first worked in papermaking, collage and assemblage, then later mixed-media paintings on wood panel and canvas. In many of these works I used traditional gesso, sand and other mixed media to build up layers of colour and texture, echoing the slow processes of erosion and decay. The East Anglian landscape with its myriad changes, in macro or panorama, natural or manmade, is a constant source of inspiration.
