Helen Dougall

Batik artist and Painter
Artist's Statement

I have always been interested in the diversity of landscape, particularly the effect of agriculture on the land - tractors ‘drawing’ across fields to produce perspective patterns and the effect of sunlight across a stubble field producing subtle variations in tone and colour, or seascapes with wet, shiny undulating beaches or multicoloured shingle.

All of these have a particular affinity with the craft of batik, in the way molten wax can be painted or drawn across a dyed area which can also be deliberately cracked to allow dye to seep in and produce a ‘cobweb’ of different coloured ‘hair’ - lines to produce textural effects. My batik wallhangings often refer to gouache and pastel paintings done from observation.

Biography
Helen Dougall studied fine art in the early 60's in London, first at the Polytechnic in Regent Street where her tutors included Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, and, later at Chelsea School of Art. She trained as an art teacher at the Institute of Education, University of London.

While teaching in London secondary schools, she continued with her own work, experimenting with printmaking and batik. In 1975 Helen moved to Suffolk with her family where the large open landscape fired her creative enthusiasm. Throughout the 80's and 90's, Helen taught art and design at Suffolk College, Ipswich, until she left in 1979 to continue with her own work.

Since then, she has taken part in a number of exhibitions and runs a couple of 3-day batik courses in her studio each year. She offers occasional workshops in schools. Helen is a member of the Batik Guild (www.batikguild.org.uk) and the Suffolk Craft Society, (www.suffolkcraftsociety.org)
