Helen Dougall
|
| Batik Wallhangings and Gouache Paintings |
| Artist's Statement |
I have always been interested in landscape
in all its diversity, after my childhood in Wales and now living
in Suffolk. But also the visible effects that man has made,
negatively and positively, on the landscape. Expressing 'a sense
of place' and my reaction to it is important to me.
My drawings and paintings, mainly in gouache or aquarelle pastel
are always done on the spot. These media have an immediacy which
enables me to express my interest in space and colour.
Sometimes, I later develop the idea through the medium of Batik,
utilising its particular potential for interesting colour and
texture combinations

| Biography |
Helen Dougall studied fine art in the early
60's in London, first at the Polytechnic in Regent Street, and
later at Chelsea School of Art. Then she trained as an art teacher
at the Institute of Education, University of London.
While teaching in secondary schools in London, she continued
with her own work, experimenting with printmaking and batik
on textiles. Helen moved to Suffolk with her family in 1975,
where the large open landscape fired her enthusiasm for painting,
drawing and producing batik textiles.
Throughout the 80's and 90's, Helen taught art and design at
Suffolk College in Ipswich, until she left in 1997 to continue
with her own work.
Since then, she has taken part in a number of exhibitions. In
2000, Helen worked with primary school children on a large batik
wallhanging to commemorate the Millennium, a project funded
by the National Lottery.
Helen is a member of the Batik Guild and since 1982 has been
a member of the Suffolk Craft Society and continues to exhibit
annually with them at the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh and
Gallery 2, The Town Hall Galleries, Ipswich.
