Gillian Crossley-Holland

Painter
Artist's Statement
Texture and light, earth, sea and sky, these are the things that interest me most. I love using both oil and chalk pastels, 'in texture and colour like the earth itself', which blend, set and meld in an instant, allowing me to play with surfaces and layers as desired. I often scrape off the top layer to find all the lovely colours and marks that happen underneath.

My main subject matter ranges from Norfolk shores to Suffolk fields with the wonderful East Anglian sky above. Of late, I have become fascinated by painting waves, especially that shifting area between wave and sand.

Biography
Gillian studied graphic design at Canterbury College of Art and worked in publishing, publicity and then book design until she and her young family went to live in the midwest of America. Whilst there, she studied printing, drawing and painting, disciplines she decided to follow full time when she eventually returned to England.

She has exhibited in America and England. Gillian teaches in schools, runs workshops and has given lectures on her pastel paintings. She continues to design and illustrate books and cards. Best of all though, she likes to go out drawing on a stormy afternoon, just at that moment when the rain stops and the sun comes out.

Gillian is a member of Norfolk Broads Arts and Tideliners, exhibiting in Burnham Overy Staithe throughout the year. She also participates in Suffolk Open Studios, is a member of their committee and opens her studio to the public in June.
