Christine McKechnie |
| Watercolour painted paper collages |
| Artist's Statement |
I discovered collage as a process when I moved to the US and my oil paints were impounded by a dock strike. At that time I also made papier-mâché pots and pieced quilts in the manner of the early settlers. I have hopes that my womanly art will eventually be recognized by a wider circle of enthusiasts. Currently winning applause at the Sir John Soane’s Museum is an exhibition of Mrs Delaney’s work, she was an 18th century maker of collages, embroideries, and designer of shell grottos, also at the V&A is a wildly popular exhibition of quilts.
My collages are made using almost exclusively hand painted Ingres and cartridge paper. This is cut, applied and layered, employing many hundreds of pieces to produce my pictures. They are produced in my studio from my detailed pencil drawings, and are mostly landscapes depicting Suffolk, my garden, and places visited on holiday.

| Biography |
Christine McKechnie trained at Southampton and Kingston Schools of Art in the early sixties. She was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Show in the eighties and nineties; in 1983 she won a special award for her work with paper. Her pictures feature in many private and some public collections. An article about her work in ‘Leisure Painter’ led to a commission for a book on the art of paper collage from Search Press Ltd. Since then she has become a regular contributor to both ‘The Artist’ and ‘Leisure Painter’.
She has demonstrated collage on Granada television, and conducted projects with children in primary schools. She has carried out a successful village sign for Worlingworth, and a lottery funded community maze and scarecrow project with the villagers of Worlingworth and Southolt.
