Chris Evans

Printmaker
Artist's Statement

Drawing has always been at the heart of my work. Sometimes I use watercolour to enhance the drawn image. I have a preference for pencil but I will happily use pen and ink and soluble pencils.

A great deal of my work is expressed in the form of print, particularly etching. Growing up in London, I greatly appreciated architecture, enjoying the shapes formed by clusters of buildings, the rich textures and exciting colours. The countryside is another source of inspiration. I enjoy drawing people involved in everyday activities.

Biography

I was educated at St Martin’s School of Art where I studied illustration and fabric design. I also attended the London College of Printing where I studied graphic design and printing mediums. After college, I worked in advertising agencies before becoming an in-house book jacket designer for a London publishing company. I combined illustrating with teaching and became fully freelance after moving to Suffolk.

At college, I had experimented with silk screen, lithography and relief prints but it was not until I took an etching course at Suffolk College that I found the medium that gave me the greatest satisfaction. I now have my own press and produce etchings, monoprints and relief prints.
