I use watercolour for its transparency and subtlety of colour with a variety of pencils, charcoals, pastels and inks and I enjoy experimenting with different kinds of papers. Strong drawing and studied composition play a basic role in my work and I often use soft coloured drawing pencils to give added texture.
My subject matter is earth-based, ranging from the exposed geology of British cliffs to land management. The focus is frequently on the arable countryside surrounding my Suffolk home, especially on the fascinating forms created by the maintenance of trees, hedges and woods, often over many centuries.
Sketches, studies and notes made in the field are translated into paintings in my studio, often becoming more abstract as the work develops.
